CCUSA names 2025 Management Excellence Award recipient

Alexandria, Va. – Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) has named Margaret (Maggie) O’Neill, the former Director of Volunteer Engagement at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington (Catholic Charities DC), the recipient of the 2025 Management Excellence Award.

Each year, the CCUSA Management and Administration Community of Practice confers this honor on an exceptional manager or supervisor in the Catholic Charities network who leads his or her team in inspiring and engaging ways. The winner of the Management Excellence Award consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication in five categories: leadership, innovation, engagement, commitment and being data-driven.

O’Neill, who retired in August after 12 years of service to Catholic Charities DC, built and shepherded a massive volunteer operation for the largest independent social services agency in the metropolitan DC area. Prior to her arrival, the agency lacked a streamlined process to make it easy for volunteers to get involved. O’Neill established the structure used to onboard and maintain the 3,500 volunteers that serve Catholic Charities DC each year. She also created a database to help maintain relationships with this growing community of volunteers.

“I’m very excited and, honestly, feeling a little sheepish to be honored by my peers with this recognition. I hope it’s obvious to everyone that I am representative of all my extraordinary colleagues who are committed to the mission of Catholic Charities, who bring smarts, energy and joy to their work,” O’Neill said. “It’s wonderful that Catholic Charities has selected a volunteer engagement professional for this management honor. I consider it the duty of Catholic Charities to welcome the entire community to do the work with us of achieving our enormous and enduring mission.”

During her time with Catholic Charities DC, O’Neill immersed herself in its nearly 50 programs across almost 30 locations, gaining a deep understanding of the individual needs and operations of each one. This level of commitment allowed O’Neill to match the right volunteers with the right programs and to establish systems to help the agency more effectively serve vulnerable people in the DC area.

Recognizing how frontline staff turnover often leads to staffing shortages at shelters, especially during peak volunteer hours of evenings and weekends, O’Neill created the Hope Corps program. Through this initiative, trained volunteers committed to serving at a particular shelter on a weekly basis become very familiar and comfortable with the shelter’s procedures and clients. These Hope Corps members can then help ease the burden placed on limited shelter staff and welcome volunteers to the site and help direct their work.

“Maggie’s thorough, innovative and enthusiastic approach to her work has made it possible for hundreds of volunteers to devote their time to living out the Gospel and helping their fellow human beings in need,” CCUSA President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson said. “Over her 12 years with Catholic Charities DC, she set an example of excellence and compassion that all of us in the Catholic Charities network should emulate in our own work.”

O’Neill will be recognized and celebrated for her outstanding service at CCUSA’s 2025 Annual Gathering this fall in Puerto Rico.

CCUSA applauds Supreme Court’s decision in Catholic Charities case

      June 5, 2025
Image of the exterior of the United States Supreme Court

In reaction to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in favor of Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior in their appeal of a decision by the Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission, Catholic Charities CEO and President Kerry Alys Robinson issued the following statement:

At Catholic Charities agencies across the United States, staff and volunteers provide merciful, life-giving services each day to those most in need in their communities, resulting in more than 15 million people each year receiving food, housing, mental and physical health care, and more crucial support in their hours of need. These ministries are informed, inspired and, in fact, mandated by the Gospel and our Catholic faith. As detailed in our amicus brief in this case, Catholic teaching also expressly prohibits proselytizing while performing charitable works as articulated clearly by Pope Benedict XVI in his 2005 encyclical Deus Caritas Est. At Catholic Charities, we don’t serve people in need because they are Catholic, and we don’t try to convert them; we serve our neighbors because we are Catholic, and we respect their faith traditions. We applaud the Supreme Court for recognizing these vital ministries as religious activities and for upholding the religious liberty of Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior in this case.

Ouweleen, a partner at Bartlit Beck LLP, is a trial lawyer who has litigated and tried high stakes civil cases across the country for over thirty years. He handles a wide range of cases, including product liability, patent, antitrust, contract, and environmental matters.

He has served on the boards of directors of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he is immediate past chairman. Ouweleen and his wife, Sarah Harding, have three adult children (Bram, Liam, and Isabel) and a great dane, Islay.

CCUSA to launch nationwide storytelling exhibit thanks to grant from Lilly Endowment

            April 23, 2025

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) announced this month to the Catholic Charities network that it will launch a nationwide storytelling exhibit, People of Hope: Faith-Filled Stories of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, in 2026. Designed to amplify the profound impact of Christian service, the ambitious project is made possible thanks to a 2024 grant of nearly $5 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. through an invitational round of its National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life.

The cornerstone of People of Hope will be an immersive experience that will tour the United States for two-and-a-half years, highlighting sacred stories of service — moments that reveal the power of volunteering, the awe of encountering others at their most vulnerable and the transformation that occurs when we live out our faith through service. The exhibit, housed in a retrofitted tractor trailer, will share professionally produced, first-person accounts from staff and volunteers of Catholic Charities agencies across the country about meaningful and memorable encounters with families and individuals in need. Visitors will be invited to record their own inspirational stories of service, and a national advertising campaign will supplement the traveling exhibit.

“We are incredibly grateful to Lilly Endowment for offering us the opportunity to shine a light on the transcendent power that springs from the simple but profound act of helping another human being in need,” CCUSA President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson said. “Through this exhibit, we hope to inspire more people of hope all around the United States to seek out opportunities to love and serve our neighbors, to be Christ-like in response to human suffering, deprivation or injustice.”

In a national survey conducted earlier this year by Campos, a market research and strategy firm based in Pittsburgh, on behalf of CCUSA, only 11 percent of respondents reported that they volunteer their time at a local organization or event. But 67 percent of those surveyed said they were “very open” or “somewhat open” to volunteering. Among those who are open to volunteering, three motivations were rated as the most likely to inspire them to do so: “to help others,” “to express empathy for those who need help” and “to feel more connected to my community.”

“Generosity is humankind’s birthright, and volunteer work allows us to be generous with our most valuable assets: our time and attention,” Robinson said. “As I travel around the country visiting our local Catholic Charities agencies, all the volunteers I encounter tell me some version of the same message: that, paradoxically, they are the true beneficiaries of their encounters with those they serve.”

Through People of Hope, CCUSA aims to highlight not only the profound impact Christian service has on the people involved and their communities but the myriad opportunities to engage in service across the country through Catholic Charities agencies and other mission-aligned organizations. The Catholic Charities network, which includes 168 independent local Catholic Charities agencies, served more than 16 million people last year thanks in part to the efforts of more than 200,000 volunteers.

In November 2024, Lilly Endowment awarded grants to CCUSA and 11 other organizations as part of an invitational round of its National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life. After spending several months further developing People of Hope, CCUSA unveiled the project to the diocesan directors of its member agencies at its annual Spring Gathering this month. Selected stories of service from Catholic Charities staff and volunteers will be professionally recorded this summer at CCUSA’s office in Alexandria, Virginia, and the traveling exhibit will launch in the spring of 2026.

            About Lilly Endowment
Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly, Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. Although the Endowment maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana, it also funds programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion.  A principal aim of the Endowment’s religion grantmaking is to deepen and enrich the lives of Christians in the United States, primarily by seeking out and supporting efforts that enhance the vitality of congregations and strengthen the pastoral and lay leadership of Christian communities. The Endowment also seeks to foster public understanding about religion and lift up in fair, accurate and balanced ways the roles that people of all faiths and diverse religious communities play in the United State and around the globe.

Kerry Alys Robinson, the president and chief executive officer of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), has been selected to receive the University of Notre Dame’s 2025 Laetare Medal — the oldest and most prestigious honor given to American Catholics — at Notre Dame’s 180th University Commencement Ceremony on May 18.

Founded in 1910, CCUSA is a national membership organization that supports and represents 168 Catholic Charities agencies across the United States. Collectively, the Catholic Charities network each year serves more than 15 million vulnerable people, regardless of their faith or background, through food and nutrition programs, affordable housing, disaster relief and a variety of other humanitarian services.

“Kerry Alys Robinson has dedicated her career to serving the Church, standing in solidarity with those on the margins so that they may experience the abundant love of God,” said Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C. “In awarding her the Laetare Medal, the University celebrates her boundless compassion, visionary leadership and inspiring example of faith-filled service. By her example, Kerry inspires us all to dedicate our lives more fully to answering the Gospel call.”

Established at Notre Dame in 1883, the Laetare Medal was conceived as an American counterpart of the Golden Rose, a papal honor that antedates the 11th century. The medal has been awarded annually at Notre Dame to a Catholic “whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.”

Previous recipients of the Laetare Medal include Civil War Gen. William Rosecrans, Governor of New York Alfred Smith, operatic tenor John McCormack, President John F. Kennedy, Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day, novelist Walker Percy, Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner (awarded jointly), Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, former CCUSA President and CEO Monsignor J. Bryan Hehir, labor activist Monsignor George G. Higgins, jazz composer Dave Brubeck, Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley Executive Director Sister Norma Pimentel M.J., singer Aaron Neville and actor Martin Sheen.

“Once when I was on the beautiful campus of Notre Dame, I found myself marveling at the list of Laetare medalists in the Main Building,” Robinson said. “Many are personally familiar to me, some dear friends, and I am in awe of the vast and varied ways they have contributed to our world and to our Church. I am profoundly humbled to join their ranks. With immense gratitude, I accept this honor in recognition of the 250,000 Catholic Charities staff and volunteers nationwide who are visible signs of hope and mercy in our nation.”

              2024 Annual Report

                February 3, 2025

The work of Catholic Charities to reduce poverty and serve those in need is the story of individuals and communities coming together to serve more than 16 million people this past year. These efforts made a life-changing difference in the lives of clients across the U.S. and in the territories.

                Summary

In 2024, the 168 agencies that make up the Catholic Charities network served more than 28 million meals to hungry men, women and children; provided emergency housing services to more than 295,000 people; and responded to 52 natural and manmade disasters – an average of one a week.

These efforts are reflected in the stories of people like Monique, who found permanent housing and employment assistance after leaving an unhealthy relationship; Todd, who at age 66, is having his first taste of semi-independent living in a group home for men with disabilities; and Koty and Jennifer who, with their two children, will finally be moving into a safe, permanent home after two hurricanes rendered their trailer uninhabitable.

Your generous support of Catholic Charities programs made these stories and so many more like them possible. We invite you now to learn more about the difference you made while helping us fulfill the Gospel mandate to care for the least of our sisters and brothers. Thank you.

                Testimonial

I always felt like I couldn’t do it. Catholic Charities helped me to see you can do anything.

Ashley, client, who is now housed, employed and supporting herself and her two young children.

Legislative Priorities for the 119th Congress

                  December 13, 2024

Since its founding, the Catholic Charities network has advocated for just and fair policies that help individuals and families who are poor and vulnerable reach their full potential. Our Catholic tradition teaches that society, acting through government and civil organizations, has a special obligation to consider the needs of these populations.

                  Summary

As Congress and the new administration consider priorities for the 119th Congress, CCUSA’s Social Policy Team advocates for funding to ensure people remain housed, fed and healthy.

CCUSA calls on Congress to prioritize programs that address the protection of all human life; religious liberty; poverty and racial justice; housing and homelessness; food and nutrition; economic security; climate change; support for disaster relief; support for children, youth and seniors; and immigration and refugee policies.

Our Catholic tradition teaches that society, acting
through government and civil organizations, has a special obligation to consider the needs of vulnerable populations.

Catholic Charities USA President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson accepts the Spirit of Saint Francis Award.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson received the 2024 Spirit of Saint Francis Award from Catholic Extension Society on December 3. The honor recognizes an individual or group who has made a significant impact on the mission of the Catholic Church in America through service or philanthropy.

Father Jack Wall, president of Catholic Extension Society, and Sister Carol Keehan, D.C., former president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association and a previous recipient, presented the award to Robinson during the organization’s tenth annual New York City Spirit of Francis Award dinner.

“Kerry, tonight we are here to recognize you as a great mentor of faith, hope, love and leadership,” Fr. Wall said. “You are one of the most articulate and inspirational voices in the Church today, and you are giving continual witness to the transformative power of the risen Christ at work right here, right now. You are a great woman of faith.”

Proceeds from the dinner will support ministries led by Catholic women, lay and religious, in regions served by Catholic Extension Society, which works in solidarity with people to build up vibrant and transformative Catholic faith communities among the poor in the poorest regions of America.

“My work on behalf of the Church, for which I am profoundly grateful, has always included work to promote the role of women in meaningful positions of leadership in the Church and at the tables of decision-making,” Robinson said. “It has always been a matter of managerial and moral urgency, not for women’s sake, for the Church’s sake. For without the leadership, expertise, judgment, participation, generosity and talents of women, along with men, the whole Church is impoverished.”

As president and CEO of CCUSA, Robinson oversees the national membership organization representing 168 Catholic Charities agencies around the country who collectively serve more than 16 million vulnerable people annually. During the awards dinner, she and Fr. Wall spoke about the important connection between CCUSA and Catholic Extension Society.

“As Father Jack mentioned, Catholic Charities has a special affinity and affection for Catholic Extension Society,” Robinson said. “You are truly our partner in serving the poor in mission dioceses, and I want to acknowledge and thank the extraordinary women who are with us tonight from across the country who work tirelessly to serve the poor.”

A member of Caritas Internationalis, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) is the membership office for Catholic Charities agencies nationwide. CCUSA’s members provide help and create hope for more than 15 million people a year regardless of religious, social or economic backgrounds.
